It's almost time again!

That's right folks! The birds are singing, the snow is melting, the winter coats are being put away for awhile, and the fairways and greens are calling my name. It's been one heck of a dull winter this year. I was sitting outside today without a coat on for the first time in a while and was trying to think of what it was this year that made it such a bad winter. NO HOCKEY! It's usually around this time of year that the playoffs are getting ramped up and the flags are starting to come out on the cars. What a great time of year to be alive! But sadly there are a bunch of greedy people that chose to take hockey away from me this year... I'm not going to get into all the barking about who is greedier cuz they all are.

BUT! the golf courses are calling my name. I went out last weekend and bought some new balls and this week I'm going to get all my clubs ready for another great summer. I think I'm starting to drive Kate crazy as every morning I wake up and say that I want to go golfing. Soon... I'm hoping to make it out to the driving range this weekend and hopefully make it out to a course in the next couple of weeks.

Connor got a brand new chair today. My head. He seemed to really like it there. Unfortunately I didn't like it as much as him as he pulled out a whole bunch of my hair and now it looks like I'm going bald!!! Blasted baby... I guess he wanted to make sure that we had similar hairlines...

Your favourite yellow cartoon people

Posted by Kate

I just finished Planet Simpson, by Chris Turner. Yes, I have read 450 pages about the Simpsons, and it has been quite an education. The author gives a history of the Simpsons, discusses why it’s funny, talks about the connections between the Simpsons, the internet and Hollywood. Then he uses each chapter to explain how one character is used to represent and critique the major ills of American society.

You might think that a book about a cartoon show would be light reading, but it wasn’t. There were lots of quotes from various episodes so it could be quite fun, but at times it read like a sociology text, or worse, the ramblings of someone who just likes to use a lot of jargon. I have never seen someone write with so many ten-dollar words. For example: "As a demonstration of the West’s social fragmentation and its self-absorption, as a symbol of the gnawing decay that betrays the grandiosity of its idealistic rhetoric, there are few things to match the west’s treatment of its elderly." Relax a little, guy, and put away your thesaurus.

I have probably not done a very good summary here, as it has taken me 2 ½ months to read the book and I have forgotten a lot. I am also not any kind of Simpsons fan, so I did not read it as gospel, as many people probably will. Anyway, if I had done a better analysis, then I would be guilty of the same Simpson obsession as the author. The man had nothing bad to say about the Simpsons except that it contained many stereotypes of other cultures. But then he even turned that around and said that it was a brilliant way to show how Americans are ignorant of other cultures!

I wonder if the author realizes what it says about our society that someone has the time to write a 400+ page book on a tv show?

Lee Norton is a big jerk.

I recently realized that I really don't like Lee Norton. He is really starting to make me angry. I think I saw him beating up little kids at the local playground. He's such a jerk. I can't blame him though cuz he's really dumb. He went to Big Al's for school. He rode on the short bus. One day I'll run into that Lee Norton fellow and get him back for all the stupid things that he used to do.

I remember one time he turned on all the gas in the science lab and they had to evacuate the whole school cuz they thought it was going to blow up. Stupid guy. If you're going to try to blow up the school, at least make sure it works. Dummy. That's why he rode on the short bus. He was dumb.

Splashy

Posted by Kate

Today Connor and I went swimming at Base Borden for the first time. It was a lot of fun. They have a swim for parents and small children three mornings a week. The pool is really great. It gradually gets deeper, like walking into the water at the beach. Connor wasn't too excited at first, but he got more interested over the 45 minutes that we were there. He got really happy when he played with a rubber duck, which reminded him of home, I guess. He was also really interested in watching two girls dump buckets of water on their dad's head. I could tell that he can hardly wait until he can do that to his dad!

Darn Blogger

Posted by Kate

Here are details of the past two days' blogging activity:

1. At 10:00 yesterday I wrote an entry. It disappeared.
2. At 10:30 I rewrote the entry as best as I could remember it. I tried to save it as a draft, so I wouldn't lose it. I lost it anyway. Grrrr. I gave up for the morning.
3. At 3:30 I rewrote the entry AGAIN on the word processor so I wouldn't lose it, and tried to post it. It didn't work as Blogger still seemed to be sick.
4. At 8:00 Dave posted my third try.
5. Today I looked on our blog and saw that my second try HAD worked, as had the third, so now there are two entries about the same thing. Blasted computer. Sorry everyone!

Snemony Licket

Posted by Kate

"Sunny had four sharp teeth, and biting things with them was what interested her the most, and she was eager to see what there was available to bite in the area."

I read my first Lemony Snicket book last night (total reading time—one hour). The story line was rather chilling and gruesome, which is why kids like it, I guess. I don’t know if I will try any of the other ten. TEN! The part I did like, though, was reading about the baby, Sunny. She likes to bite things, which is a lot like Connor. In "The Miserable Mill" Sunny used her teeth to debark logs and fight a woman with a sword. She didn’t get to chew gum, though. Connor doesn’t have any teeth yet, but sometimes he gets in a mood where he will voraciously chomp at anything available—a toy, a sweater, Dave’s chin…I also like the way Sunny would shriek out nonsense words which would then be translated into English: Snevi! Nojeemo! Molub!
Well, maybe I will read another one. But only because I like to say "Lemony Snicket".

I read my first Lemony Snicket book last night (total reading time: one hour). I found the story line rather sinister, and don't know if I could handle reading the other ten. TEN! In The Miserable Mill, Sunny used her teeth to debark trees and fight a woman with a sword. I also love the way she is always shrieking out nonsense words, which are then translated: Snevi! Popinsh! Stintamcunu!
Well, I might read another one. But mostly just because I like saying "Lemony Snicket".
